Located east of Hawler, Khanzad Castle lies on Erbil-Shaqlawa road and is one of the archaeological sites in the city of Erbil. It dates back to Soran Principality period when Princes ruled (Sulaiman Beg and Princess Khanzad) in Soran district whose capital was Rawandouz at the time.
It was constructed during the Soran Emirate, under the rule of Prince Suleiman Bag and Princess khanzad. Built by stones and gypsum, the citadel has kept its original shape.
The steps to the castle are steep and full of pebbles; comfortable shoes are recommended. The castle is on the right hand side when driving towards Shaqlawa from Erbil.
